Your questions answered

Are you open during the COVID-19 pandemic?

We are still open and carrying out medicals and have put in place various measures to keep you and our staff safe.

To limit the flow of people though the building we currently have limited appointment availability and are trying to undertake medicals in specified clinics as per the booking page. If you are unable to make one of these clinics then please get in touch and we will try our best to find a suitable time for you.

We ask you to wear a facemask for your appointment

To limit use of toilet facilities, we ask you to do a urine sample at home and bring this with you. Please use a washed out plastic or glass jar/bottle. Your urine test is to check your kidney function and ensure you do not have diabetes. It is not a drugs or alcohol test.

To limit the flow of people through the building we ask that you wait in your car in the car park. On arrival please text 07593 565176 and someone will collect you from the car park. Please bring a book to read in case we are running a little later than scheduled.

What should I wear to my medical?

Please come to your medical wearing comfortable clothes you can move easily in as you may be required to do a step test.

What do I need to bring?

You will need to bring:

  • Photo ID (passport, driving licence or Seaman’s Discharge Book)
  • GP’s name, surgery address and contact details
  • Details of any medication you’re taking
  • Your glasses or contact lenses if you wear them (though not colour correction lenses). You will need to remove contact lenses during examination
  • Your previous medical certificate if you have one
What does a medical involve?

Different medicals will have different requirements. Medicals will commonly involve:

  • Urine sample to test kidney function and blood sugar levels
  • Height and weight measurement
  • Take blood pressure
  • Physical examination
  • Eyesight and colour blindness tests

If you have any previous medical history then the doctor will discuss this with you too.

Sometimes other tests are needed such as a step test, an ECG or spirometry (breathing test).

How long will it take?
The appointment usually lasts 30–40 minutes
Where will my medical take place?

We operate from two locations: Churchfield Surgery, Sleights and Sandsend Surgery, Sandsend. The location of your medical will be allocated on booking so please double check this prior to attending.

How much does a medical cost?

The fees are different depending on the type of medical. Please contact us to find out the cost.

When do I pay for my medical?
We take payment on booking and will send you a receipt by email. If your employer is paying for your medical you can send them the receipt for reimbursement. Please use the contact form to discuss potential alternative arrangements if this is difficult for you.
What if I need to cancel my appointment?

If you need to cancel your appointment please give us as much notice as possible so we are able to offer your slot to somebody else.

If you do not attend your appointment without letting us know you will not be eligible for a refund.

What if I am late for my appointment?
Please let us know as soon as possible if you are running late by calling +44 (0)7593 565176 and we will do our best to accommodate you.
